Having Internet Problems? Try my helpful file! ResetInternet will help the
user to reset their internet or just refresh everything. This is one of those
things thats better to have and not need than need and not have. How do
you download the file when you have no internet?
Download
Current Version is 1.5beta (78k)
Or if you want a no GUI streamlined version that contains the most basic way
to attempt to reestablish your connection and works most of the time...
Download
Current Version is 1.0 (81.6k)
*NOTE* The no GUI version does not have all the abilities of the GUI version,
but is the equivalent to the first choice in the GUI version.
What are all these choices?
In the file there are 5 choices of action to take once started.
- Choice 1 "Continue Resetting Internet": This is the simplest method to cure connection related problems. Windows contains a very similar method to attempt to make a connection. If you still can not connect to the internet after attempting choice 1 try disconnecting the power from your modem for 5 minutes. Then reconnect the power and try your connection again. If you notice that lights are not lit steadily on your modem after a few minutes your internet provider may have an issue or you may need a new modem. If the lights that are not lit are labeled "Standby" or "PC/Activity" you are probably ok. The PC/Activity light usually blinks and the other lights are usually steady when connected properly. If Standby is lit this means your modem is in an off state and you need to find a button on the modem that brings your modem out of standby.
- Choice 2 "Reset Hosts file and Winsock": This is a more invasive method to cure connection issues. The Hosts file redirects connection traffic where it is set to do so. ResetInternet changes the Hosts file back to default (all local traffic is routed to 127.0.0.1 and nothing else). ResetInternet does make a back up of your Hosts file before it changes it See choice 3. Sometimes Hosts files are used to prevent the user from connecting to a bad site. If there are too many entries your computer may be come slow and the internet may become unusable. The Hosts file can also be changed my malicious software to trick people into thinking they are going to their bank page, but are instead redirected to a scammers site.
- Choice 3 "Undo changes from choice 2": Basically this gives the user the ability to restore a back up copy of their Original Hosts file and/or the ability to restore the Last Hosts file backed up by ResetInternet. The difference is the Original Hosts file is the back up from the first time ResetInternet was run and the Last Hosts file is the back up from the last time ResetInternet was run. So if the user made a change to their Hosts file after running ResetInternet once. They do not lose the changes they made if they run ResetInterent again and find their connection is no longer working. The Last Hosts file will be overwritten each time the user uses option 2. This means that the Last Hosts file is only there to let the user revert a last working state if they find their connection is broken after using option 2.
- Choice 4 "Trouble Shoot Your Connection": This is basically a checklist of things to go through if the user still can not connect to the internet. Sometimes unplugging the modem's power and allowing it to cool down is the solution to the connection issues, but ResetInternet was designed to use the quickest methods first and allow the user to go through one step at a time to discover their connection issue rather than being given a whole slew of solutions at once.
- Choice 5 "Quit": Honestly, if you can't figure this one out how did you get to this website?
